My daughter's middle school is raising money to sponsor a vet's Honor Flight to see the WWII Memorial. They had 3 WWII vets come in about a month ago and tell their stories. Here is just one of their great stories...One of the guys finally got his discharge papers on Christmas Day at the end of the war. He had been in the navy for 4 years battling in the Pacific and so he boarded a train in San Francisco back home to Pittsburgh. He said he was worried for the entire 3 day trip because he was sure his wife was going to be at the station to meet him. He had gotten married only a week before he was shipped out and only had one photo of her from several years ago. So he was scared that he wouldn't recognize her. When the train pulled into Pittsburgh, he stepped on to platform and he knew right away which one was his wife. He said that they have been together ever since and he hasn't been worried in over 60 years.
