Is Winter the Best Time to Pre-Plan a Funeral?

Like most industries, there is a busy season and a non-busy season for funeral homes. Although no one can predict their time of death, funeral homes tend to see more traffic during the summer months. More families choose this time to make pre-arrangements, purchase cemetery plots, and inter ashes they may have been holding onto since the winter. Because it can be difficult to open up the ground under piles of snow (and because gathering funeral guests around the holidays is almost impossible), people may also put off traditional burial until the warmer months. Coordinating Out-of-Town Funeral Guests

It is often said that planning a funeral and planning a wedding are similar tasks. You must coordinate an event for up to hundreds of guests at a time, feed them, arrange transportation, and find places for everyone to stay. When planning a wedding, however, you usually have months of time in which to prepare. Funerals take place within a week or so of death occurring, which means you have to coordinate travel, accommodations, transportation, and (in some cases) entertainment all within a short time frame.

If you can assign this task to a family member wishing to help out with funeral plans, you can make your own job easier. However, you can also coordinate everything on your own by following these steps. (more…)

Funeral Dinner Menu Planning

Although you are not required to feed all the funeral guests as soon as the service is over, partaking of a funeral dinner (or luncheon) is a common part of the mourning ritual. Some families choose to have this event catered, some hold it in a favorite restaurant or bar, some ask for guests to bring dishes to eat potluck style, and still others do the cooking themselves. How Can I Be Buried with My Pet?

How Can I Be Buried with My Pet?

For many pet owners, the loss of a pet is as deeply upsetting as the loss of a friend or relative. Often serving as companions for decades, dogs and cats have a way of working themselves into our lives and into our hearts in a way that modern pet burial methods do not allow for. Pet cemeteries, pet cremations, and burial in the backyard might work for some individuals—but for others, nothing less than burial together will suffice. (more…)

Funeral Flower Colors and Their Meanings

Although there tend to be rules regarding the color of your funeral attire (dark is best, with black, gray, and navy blue taking the lead), funeral flowers are more relaxed in terms of color choice. As long as you keep the arrangement tactful, you can send any other combination of colors you choose—and to put more thoughtfulness in your sympathy gift, you can even consider these popular flower colors and their meanings. Funeral Planning and Community Support

In an ideal world, funeral plans would always be a family affair. Siblings would come together from around the country to bury a parent. Friends and colleagues would pitch in to help a bereaved spouse struggling with finances. Entire communities would mourn the passing of a child. While these types of scenarios can and do happen all the time,  that is not always the case. There are many times when one person is left dealing with funeral plans and loss all on their own—and they may need to find support to make it through. (more…)
