Alaska is nicknamed "the Last Frontier." Its name is derived from the Aleut word "Alyeska", which means "great land".  It was through the efforts of then Secretary of State William H. Seward that the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in March 30, 1867. When it was purchased for 7.2 million dollars or 2 cents per acre, it was called "Seward's Folly". Alaska is the largest state among the US states.

One sad thing to note in Alaska is that in 2004, Alaska had the highest suicide rates among all the states, with the rate of 23.6 percent. They came in third spot the next year. The data can differ drastically each year though.
