Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because when it became the 38th state, the United States turned 100 on August 1, 1876. The name of the state is derived form the Spanish word which means "ruddy" or "red". This is because of much of the state's terrain color. There are 54 peaks in the Rocky Mountains that rise over 14, 000 feet. Did you know that this is the only state in history that turned down the Olympics? Denver was supposed to host the Winter Olympics but chose not to hold it at the last minute due to the insistent voter's demand. The people reasoned out that hosting the Winter Olympics would only bring pollution and expenses on the state.

In Fruita, there is one odd celebration. The town folk celebrate 'Mike the Headless Chicken Day'. A particular farmer, named L.A. Olsen cut off Mike's head on September 10, 1945 in anticipation of a chicken dinner. Much to everyone's surprise, Mike the chicken, lived for four years more without a head. Colorado also houses the oldest wooden merry-go-round in the United States of America. Burlington's the Kit Carson County is the only wooden carousel in the nation that still has its original paint.

Colorado has been the only state that doesn't require licenses in the funeral industry for over 20 years. It was just only in July of last year that funeral directors were obliged to be certified before they could conduct a funeral. However, people don't still have to buy caskets and use a funeral home. Home funerals have been the practiced in this state. Most families perform the duties of a funeral director by themselves including notifying the coroner, filing the death certificate and handling arrangements for the service. As all states laws require, standards of funeral service must be followed.
