It is part of the Anchorage, Alaska Anchorage metropolitan area Statistical Area. A June 1996 wildfire destroyed more than in the Houston and Big Lake, Alaska Lake area, including 433 buildings and homes valued at $8.9 million. The population was 1,202 at the 2000 United States Census census.
