Before the area that Albany sits on was settled by Europeans the Creek Indians inhabited the area. They called the area Thronateeska, referring to the word "flint". The area's river provided a wealth of flint, a hard sedimentary form of mineral quartz, that the Creek used to create tools, arrowheads, and other weapons.

Albany, Georgia is city located in the Dougherty County. Among the cities which belong to the Albany MSA, Albany is considered the principal city in the region. The site which is now the Albany city was once inhabited by the Creek Indians and called the place Thronateeska which meant flint. This was due to the mineral that is found along the region's river. Laid out by Alexander Shotwell, the city was incorporated on December 27, 1838 through the General Assembly of Georgia.The main industry in Albany had always been agriculture with cotton as its prime product. But as development spread throughout the nation, several industries were also established in the city. Transportation, manufacturing and trading has become livelier in Albany.
While there are a number of industrial establishments operating in the city, there are also several cemeteries run in Albany where some of them have turned to be tourist attractions. The city cemeteries are the Crown Hill Cemetery, Carver Cemetery, Oakview Cemetery, Riverside Cemetery and the Thundering Springs Cemetery.
