In 1836 two conniving brothers sold plots of land which they told people were near a city named Biddle City. When the New Yorkers who had bought the plots arrived to the area they realized that they had been had, and Biddle City did not in fact exist. The pioneers decided to stay in the area, and thus began the town of Lansing which was located a mile north of the imaginary city.
