Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 47,315, reflecting a decline of 368 (-0.8%) from the 47,683 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,622 (+5.8%) from the 45,061 counted in the 1990 Census. It surrounds the Bloomfield Green Historic District.

History

Bloomfield was incorporated as a township from portions of Newark, New Jersey Township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1812. There were 19,017 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were Marriage couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. In July 1981, residents voted to adopt the township (New Jersey) form. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Bloomfield was incorporated as a town (New Jersey) on February 26, 1900.
