History
The county seat moved from Toledo to Newport, Oregon in 1954. Toledo is a city located on the Yaquina River and along US Route 20 (Oregon) Route 20 in Lincoln County, Oregon County, Oregon, United States. and became a major employer in the area. After the formation of the Spruce Production Division of the US Army Signal Corps in November 1917, Toledo was to be home to one of four major sawmills processing the old growth Sitka Spruce needed for the production of airplanes for the United States Army Air Service. The newly-formed Pacific Spruce Corporation bought the uncompleted sawmill, a railroad line, and related equipment.
