History

The population was 427 at the 2000 United States Census census. Because of the town's mountainous terrain, the invention of the one-legged milking stool is attributed to Pittsfield "..as a means of conquering a stern difficulty.". By 1859, the population was 512. It is site of the annual Pittsfield Snowshoe Race.

Granted on November 8, 1780 to Samuel Wilcox and 129 others, the town was named for Pittsfield, Massachusetts when incorporated by the Vermont General Assembly on July 29, 1781, the year it was first settled. Pittsfield is a town in Rutland County, Vermont County, Vermont, United States.
