Waterford is an unincorporated village in the Catoctin Valley of Loudoun County, Virginia, located along Catoctin Creek. Waterford is 47 miles (76 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., and 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Leesburg. The entire village and surrounding countryside is a National Historic Landmark district.In the 1810 United States Census, the population center of the United States was recorded as being just northwest of the village.

History

Waterford is an unincorporated area village in Loudoun County, Virginia County, Virginia located along Catoctin Creek (Virginia) Creek. Before the Civil War, it was the second most populous community in Loudoun County after Leesburg, Virginia The Waterford Historic District is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. .

The village was named after the town of Waterford, Ireland in Ireland, where some of its founders had once lived before immigrating to the United States.

Waterford was established around 1732 by Amos Janney, a Pennsylvania Quaker, and as such was a heavily Union (American Civil War) town in during the American Civil War War and scene of a fierce The Fight at Waterford between the county's Unionist and Confederate partisan units, the Loudoun Rangers and 35th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry Rebels, respectively.
