St. Charles is best known for the Battle of Saint Charles, which was fought on the White River, which borders the town. History
The latter two were brothers, Walker Griffin being the man originally arrested. Whether the police officer was simply saying that to cause fear, or whether that was their actual intention, has never been known for certain. On 17 June 1862, at the Battle of Saint Charles, 8 Federal vessels including the ironclad gunboat USS Mound City 'Mound City' attempted to pass Confederate States of America shore guns here, on the banks of the White River. . Around 3:00am on March 24th, 1904, angry white men stormed the warehouse, and dragged six black men outside.
