By 1880, the population had dropped to 100. Lake City (originally Painesville) is an unincorporated area community in Nevada County, California County, California, United States, east of North Columbia, California and west of North Bloomfield, California

The town was settled in 1853 as a result of the California Gold Rush and subsequent hydraulic mining at Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park Diggins. In 1877, it was included on the route of the world's first long-distance telephone line. . Within four years, more than 300 people lived in town.
