Facts about Somersville, Connecticut

The Somersville Historic District is a historic district in Somers, Connecticut. The district encompasses the mill village of Somersville, and is centered on a mill complex on the Scantic River, which divides the district. The most significant years of development were between about 1835 and 1935, although the area has a history (and surviving structures) dating to the 1760s. The Somersville Manufacturing Company built large numbers of surviving mill housing beginning about 1885, including a significant number of multiunit and tenement-style buildings.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

History

*1838 - The Four Town Fair is established. *1962 - [http://www.qwd.com/shs/ The Somers Historical Society] opens. *1797 - The Commissioners recommend that a disputed tract be awarded to Massachusetts as compensation for its earlier losses of Suffield, Woodstock, Somers, and Enfield to Connecticut. *1963 - Somers State Prison opens. They end up eight miles (13 km) too far south, thus assigning the frontier towns of Suffield, Connecticut Enfield, Connecticut Woodstock, Connecticut and Somers to Massachusetts.
