Groton is a town in northwestern Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,873 at the 2012 town census. It is home to two prep schools: Groton School, founded in 1884, and Lawrence Academy at Groton, founded in 1792. The historic town was a battlefield in King Philip's War and Queen Anne's War, experienced incidents of insurrection during Shays's Rebellion, and was the birthplace of William Prescott, who commanded the colonial forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

History

Groton would again be beset by Indians during Queen Anne's War, when several citizens of the town were abducted to Canada. The town was officially settled and incorporated in 1655, named for Groton, Suffolk in Suffolk County, England, the hometown of an early selectman, Dean Winthrop. Called "The Plantation of Groton," it included all of present-day Groton and Ayer, MA almost all of Pepperell (town), Massachusetts and Shirley, MA large parts of Dunstable, MA and Littleton, MA plus smaller parts of Harvard, MA Westford, MA Nashua, NH, and Hollis, NH. Groton is a town located in northwestern Middlesex County, Massachusetts County, Massachusetts. The population of Groton was 9,547 at the 2000 census.
