History

Columbia is a city in Marion County, Mississippi County, Mississippi, United States, which was formed six years before Mississippi was admitted to statehood. It is the county seat of Marion County, Mississippi County .

The site was first settled by John and William Lot in the early 1800s, giving the town its original name, Lott's Bluff. The population was 6,603 at the 2000 census. In that year, a special session of the legislature met in Columbia, inaugurating Governor Walter Leake, and selecting LeFleur's Bluff (now Jackson, Mississippi as the permanent capital.[http://www.mainstreetcolumbia.com] Former Mississippi governor and Columbia native Hugh L.
