Metlakatla /ˌmɛtləˈkætlə/ (Tsimshian: Maaxłakxaała \"Saltwater pass\") is a census-designated place (CDP) on Annette Island in Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 1,375; this had grown to 1,405 by the 2010 census.

History

Until recently, it was the largest airfield in Alaska. He and a devoted group of Tsimshian followers decided to leave Metlakatla. After the war it became a United States Coast Guard search and rescue base. The project is the result of a 50-year old treaty promising the Metlakatla Indian Community a road connecting their ocean-side city to Alaska's inside passage, to allow year-round ferry service to Ketchikan. Although the reservation system had not been used in Alaska, this request was granted in 1891.
