About Plaza Jewish Community Chapel

Why Plaza at a time of loss?

We are here for you. That may seem like a simple and obvious statement, but it is all too uncommon. We are not like other funeral chapels. Not in philosophy, not in practice. We are dedicated to the belief that the process of grief is not a business proposition but rather an emotional, human passage to be treated with dignity and conscience. That is our sole motivation. We are not like others, nor do we strive to be. We promise to take you through this difficult time with care, with sensitivity, and with thoughtfulness. We do not hurry decisions. We do not feel there is a relationship between what is spent and what has been lost. There is only what is right for you and your family. We encourage you to decide what your own approach and values dictate, what makes you comfortable, what your loved one would have wanted, and to follow that guidance.

Plaza is the first and only funeral chapel in New York that is owned and operated by the Jewish Community as a service rather than a business. Plaza is a facility that was formerly owned and operated by Service Corporation International (SCI) as part of its network of publicly-owned, for-profit funeral homes.

Why does the community need to own a funeral chapel?  Helping families at the time of death was traditionally the responsibility of the community acting through a chevra kadisha (burial society).  Most of the family-owned funeral businesses that functioned like a chevra kadisha have been sold to publicly traded corporations that must make a profit and pay a dividend to shareholders.  Vulnerable families were the victims of sales pressure that caused funeral observances to depart from the simplicity and dignity of a Jewish funeral.

New York’s Attorney General determined that SCI was a monopoly that charged unfairly high prices. He forced SCI to sell Plaza Memorial Chapel, inc. to break the monopoly.

Services offered by Plaza Jewish Community Chapel

Plaza ensures that families receive information regarding Jewish funeral practices in a compassionate manner, free of commercial pressure, so that loved ones can select the arrangements which suit their needs and feel assured about their choices.

Plaza’s professional staff works under your rabbi’s direction if you are a member of a congregation and will assist you in finding the right rabbi for your needs if you are not a member.

Plaza recognizes that end of life issues often require more than our professional services and maintains working relationships with the network of Jewish communal organizations that can provide social, material and spiritual support.

Plaza is able to serve families from the entire metropolitan Jewish community, as well as Manhattan, and provides a full range of services including transfer of remains from other states and countries; obtaining death certificates; publishing funeral notices, making cemetery arrangements, and pre-need planning.

If you are interested in preplanning your funeral service, you can be sure your legacy will be shielded and that you can have peace of mind. This location has proudly served the area with exceptional care for years and will help guide your family through memorial service etiquette, personalize your memorial, funeral costs, directions to cemeteries, guestbook, online obituary creation, and telling your life story.
