Facts about Juneau, Alaska
The capital of the Alaska state is Juneau City. The city is located in the Gastineau Channel found on the Archipelago of Alexander situated in the southeastern part of Alaska. The area which has now become the Juneau City had been first inhabited by the Tingit Indians which are known to belong to the Auke and Taku tribes. It was then a fishing place which was the favorites of the early inhabitants. The site was founded by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris and was then a mining camp. It was after Joe Juneau that the city was named. But before it was called Juneau, its original name was Harrisburg and then changed to Rockwell and in 1881 was finally changed to Juneau.
One of the most famous festivals in the area is the Alaska Folk Festival and Juneau Jazz Classic music fest. Other city attractions include the Juneau Douglas City Museum, The Juneau Lyric Opera, The Last Chance Mining Museum & Historical Park, The Juneau Symphony and the Opera to Go. Majority of the city's income is derived from the direct offices and indirect offices of the government; the federal and the municipal government. The University of Alaska Southeast is also one of the major employers of the region.
There are three major cemeteries in the city like the Evergreen Cemetery. It is in the same cemetery where the bodies of Joe Juneau, Alfred Swinefold, John Weir Troy and George Alexander Parks are buried.
