When European settlers arrived in the area in 1845 they initially named their town Prairie Rapids Crossing. Charles Mullan, one of the first residents and first postmaster hoped to create a post office for the town. When trying to come up with a name for the post office, he noticed the name Waterloo on a list of existing post offices. Liking the name, he chose it for proposed post office. Within a few years the residents adopted the name Waterloo for the town.

The city of Waterloo is located in the Black Hawk County and is a part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waterloo's original name was Prairie Rapids Crossing and was established by a museum staff. The very first settlers of the area which is at present the Waterloo city were George and Mary Melrose Hanna and their children. They arrived in the area in the year 1845. The proof of early settlements are still seen at present in the streets named after the settlers; Mullan Avenue, Virden Creek and Hanna Blvd.
A few of the city's known residents are Julie Adams, David Barrett, Horace Boies, Dan Gable, Lou Henry Hoover, J.J. Moses, Don Perkins, Arthur R. Kellly, Corey Taylor, Kim Guadagno, William Birenbaum, Michele Bachman, Bonnie Koloc and Thunderbolt Patterson. Some of the city attractions include the Lincoln Park, Lost Island Waterpark, Hickory Hills Park, Airline Amusement Park, Waterloo Black Hawks, Gates Park Golf Course, College Square Mall, Waterloo Community Playhouse and Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
The Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery is one of the city's popular cemeteries. In here the bodies of John Williams Gwyne and Albert Clinton Willford are buried. Other cemeteries in Waterloo are Catholic Cemetery, Elmwood Cemetery and Garden of Memories cemetery. The city's memorial grounds had been well maintained all through these years and some of them have turned to be attractions as well.
