Pittston is a city in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. The city gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an active anthracite coal mining city, drawing a large portion of its labor force from European immigrants. The population was 7,739 as of the 2010 census. At its peak in 1920, the population of Pittston was 18,497. The city consists of three sections: The Downtown (in the center of the city), the Oregon Section (in the southern end), and the Junction (in the northern end).

History

It is approximately midway between Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Scranton, Pennsylvania Named after the famous British statesman William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham Pitt the Elder, the city was settled around 1770 by the Susquehanna Company of Connecticut. Pittston was incorporated as a borough in 1855, and was chartered as a city in 1894. The population was 8,104 at the United States Census, 2000 census.

Pittston lies in the Wyoming Valley on the east side of the Susquehanna River, and on the south side of the Lackawanna River. Pittston is a city in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania County, Pennsylvania, United States, between Scranton, Pennsylvania and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania It gained prominence in the late 19 century and early 20 century centuries as an active anthracite coal mining city, drawing a large portion of its labor force from immigrants immigrants.
