In August 1746, a party of thirty-two Indians secreted themselves near the lower falls for the apparent purpose of surprising Weare's garrison, in the process killing Philip Greely, who came upon them. Once resettlement began, the town's population began to grow rapidly. The structural frame of the first meeting house was raised in 1729, and nine years later the first school was built. By 1810, the population was 3,295.
