The Birmingham city in Alabama is the seat of Jefferson County was founded in 1871 when the American Civil War has just ended. The major industries in the city are mining, railroads, steel and iron industry and transportation. The city got its name from a city in the Great Britain which was also known as a major metal manufacturer in the country. With its fast growth and development when it comes to steel industry, it has earned two nicknames; the "The Pittsburgh of the South" and "The Magic City". On a clockwise direction to the north, the city of Birmingham has the railroad lines connecting the city with Memphis, Tennessee, Columbus, Georgia, Nashville, Jackson, Mississippi, Chattanooga, Atlanta and Tuscaloosa.
The city of Birmingham is also the home of known educational institutes like The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Samford University, University of Montevallo, Virginia College in Birmingham, Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, Lawson State Community College and Jefferson State Community College.
When it comes to tourism, there are a number of attractions the city of Birmingham can be proud of like the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Birmingham Museum of Art, Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, McWane Science Center, Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Southern Museum of Flight/Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center and the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.
