Pocatello is known as the nations "Smile Capital." After suffering a particularly harsh winter in 1948 the mayor jokingly made it illegal not to smile. This law was never enforced, but remained on the books. The residents still commemorate this unique law with an annual celebration.

Pocatello is the largest city in the county of Bannock with a little part of the city lying in the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The city was named after the Shoshoni Chief, Chief Pocatello who granted the permission for the railroad across the Fort hall Indian Reservation. The city is also the main city in the Pocatello MSA. In the city, it is against the law not to smile and this has gained its nickname as the US Smile Capital. With this, the Smile Festival is held yearly to commemorate the law. In the whole state, Pocatello is the fourth largest city and had been once ranked by Forbes to be one of the best small places to make business and start a career.
Pocatello was originally founded as a railroad during the gold rush era in Idaho but has turned to be an agriculture hub as years passed by. Pocatello is also the home of a known comedienne, Billie Bird. Some other personalities from Pocatello are lance Parry, Ash Covey, Benedicte Wrensted, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Stephen Shortridge.
