History

Thompson Falls is a city in and the county seat of Sanders County, Montana County, Montana, United States. In 1885 John Russell bought and plotted the town site. The population was 1,321 at the 2000 United States Census census. The largest employer in the city is the nearby Spring Creek Lodge Academy, which closed on Jan. 2009.

Thompson Falls is named for the British explorer, geographer and fur trader David Thompson (explorer) Thompson, who in 1809 founded Saleesh House, a North West Company Fur trade trading post.
