The city is not only South Carolina's second largest city but its oldest as well. In 1901, it became the seat of the Charleston County right upon its creation. The city was originally named Charles Towne and later was changed to its present name in the year 1783. Ever since, Charleston is one of the nation's largest cities in terms of population. With the dominance of churches in Charleston, it had been called the "The Holy City". '
The city is also the home of several historical sites and structures. Some interesting structures are the Gibbes Museum of Arts, Fireproof Building, Nathaniel Russell House, Charleston Museum, Heyward-Washington House, Joseph Manigault House, Governor William Aiken House and the Exchange and Provost. The Magnolia Cemetery is also considered to be a historic burial site. Some of its famous interments are William Brawley, Andrew Gordon Magrath, Daniel Elliott huger, Langdon Cheves, Thomas Bennett, George Dixon, Horace Lawson Hunley, William Gilmore Simms, Burnet Rhett Maybank, Frank bunker Gilbreth Jr., Josephine Pinckney, Wilson Godfrey Harvey and Hugh Legare.
