Metairie was founded in the 1720's by the French. The name reflects the agricultural system that was in place at the time of its founding. Metairie is a French word that translates to "tenant farm." The residents of the area would pay the landlord of the land they inhabited on a portion of their produce as payment for living on the land. This system was in use in the area until around 1910.
