Silver Spring got its name in 1840 when Francis Preston Blair and his daughter Elizabeth came across a spring that appeared to glitter like silver. The silvery effect was produced by the presence of mica, a shiny mineral. Admiring the spring's beauty they chose a nearby location for their homestead and named it Silver Spring. The original spring which inspired them is thought to flow through Acorn Park.
